Pigmentation Affects All Skin Colors

Skin of every color can develop problems with pigment or redness due to chronic sun exposure, hormones, genetics, or medical skin disorders. 

Brown spots that are darker than the surrounding skin are often a result of chronic sun exposure and may develop many years after someone starts using sunscreen. 

Hormonal influences play an important role in the patchy dark pigmentation seen on both sides of the face in melasma so it requires a different treatment strategy than sunspots. 

Skin that tans easily is prone to developing darkened areas, called post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, in areas where there had been irritation or an injury. Certain lasers or strong chemical peels can worsen post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation so it’s important to have experienced clinicians choose a treatment to improve it.

Light skin tends to be more prone to a loss of normal pigmentation in scars or areas of skin injury. A skin disorder called vitiligo causes the patchy loss of all of the pigment in affected areas and it can occur in all skin colors.
